JPEG XS - A new JPEG format for virtual reality, self-driving cars and space imagery

The Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) has just unveiled JPEG XS.
With this new format, low power consumption (through lightweight image processing), low-latency in coding and decoding. JPEG XS will have applications in areas such as virtual reality, augmented reality, self-driving cars, professional movie editing and most importantly space imagery which requires running on a small source of energy.
A low-latency lightweight image coding system allows for an increased resolution and frame rate, while offering visually lossless quality with reduced amount of resources such as power and bandwidth at a reasonable level.
